Recovery codes: how to keep them and how to use them

They are the only key to your mailbox if the password is lost. We cannot restore access any other way — and that is deliberate.

What they are

At registration you receive a set of one-time codes. Each works once and lets you set a new password.

They are shown exactly once. We store only their hash — we could not read your codes even if we wanted to.

Where to keep them

  1. In a password manager — the most convenient option.
  2. On paper in a drawer — also workable, and it does not depend on electricity.
  3. Not in the mailbox itself: losing access to it would lose the codes with it.
  4. Not in unlocked phone notes, and not in a cloud whose sign-in goes through this same mailbox.

How to use one

  1. Open the account recovery page.
  2. Enter your mailbox address and one of the codes.
  3. Set a new password. The used code will not work again.

If you run out

While you still have access, a new set is issued from your account — the old codes stop working at that moment. With neither access nor codes, what remains is a support request with control questions about the mailbox; that takes longer and does not always succeed.
