Online QR code scanner
See what is inside a QR code before you open it: a link, a Wi-Fi network, a contact or a payment. Images and camera frames are processed in your browser and sent nowhere.
Runs in your browser: the tool’s code contains no sending of what you enter. The tool opens in a separate frame from office.alpost.ch: the rules of that page (CSP) forbid fetch, XHR, WebSocket and beacon requests, and the browser blocks loading anything from third-party addresses — only the tool’s own files from office.alpost.ch are loaded. See for yourself: developer tools (F12) → Network tab.
How to use it
- Choose an image with a code, paste it from the clipboard (Ctrl+V) or turn on the camera with the button.
- See what is inside: the code type and its fields — a Wi-Fi network with password, a contact, a payment or a link.
- For a link, read the check: the real site, encryption, signs of imitation. It opens only through the button.
Why check a QR code
Fraudsters stick their own labels over real codes in car parks, cafés and on bills: the code leads to a copy of a bank or payment site. The scanner shows the whole address and highlights the actual site — the part right before the last dot and the zone, such as example.ch.
What is checked
Encryption (https or http), an IP address instead of a name, internationalised addresses and mixed alphabets (a Latin «a» and a Cyrillic «а» look the same), text before «@» in front of the site name, link shorteners that hide the real address, and the name of a well-known brand — a bank, a post office, a shop — on someone else’s domain. The brand list is the same one we use to check sites on our own hosting.
Camera and privacy
The camera turns on only when you press the button and allow it in the browser. Frames are not stored: the scanner’s code contains no sending of them, and its page rules forbid fetch, XHR, WebSocket and beacon requests.
Questions and answers
- Do I need to install an app?
- No. The scanner works in the browser on computers and phones; on a phone you can use the camera or pick a screenshot.
- Can it read a code from a screenshot?
- Yes: save or copy the image and paste it with Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac), or choose it as a file.
- The check shows a warning — is it surely a scam?
- Not necessarily: honest companies use short links too, for example. A warning means one thing — look at the address carefully and do not enter passwords or card details if in doubt.
- And if there are no warnings?
- That is no guarantee: the check looks for typical signs of imitation but does not know every site. Compare the highlighted domain with the one you expect.
- Does it read Swiss QR-bills and SEPA codes?
- Yes: it shows the payee, IBAN, amount and purpose, and for Wi-Fi the network name and password.
